(If you follow me on Twitter, you've been watching me kvetch about this all week. Lucky you.)

We have spent the past week trying to beat the septic system into submission. A 50' powered snake was rented, and falsely let us believe the problem was solved. However, it doesn't quite reach from the house to the tank. Friday, the 75' powered snake was borrowed from the meat processing plant. That one reaches all the way. We know this because at 10 last night my father was peering down the access pipe for pumping the tank while I fed the snake (and a running garden hose) in from the house. The 200' of leech field pipe has been completely cleared. There were no less than 3 clogs at various points, which is why it kept backing up and flowing out the top into the sheep pen.

The pipe from the house to the tank has 2 small ... somethings ... stuck to the bottom, and since the pipe is almost level, that means the water backwashes until the level is high enough to flow over them. What's left on this end slowly sinks into the dirt.

Oh, and half the part where the cap screws in is broken off, so the cap can not be replaced. >_<

So at 6:30 this morning, I ran to Home Depot for a smaller cleanout plug & pipe adapter that I could shove into ours (which, by the way is the lovely odd size of 3.5", while every large pipe you can buy at HD now is now an even 3" or 4"). DX Right now I have marine epoxy setting in the gaps, and I'm drinking my coffee, waiting before I try draining the washing machine and seeing if the basement and/or shower floods again. I have to leave for work in an hour.

At least the shower drains. Enough. :sigh:

EDIT: Holy crap I think it worked! :crosses fingers & happy dances at the same time:

Farm-to-Fork Farm Dinner Fiasco

(Having just gone through ServSafe in addition to being farm raised and (horror of horrors) growing up on farm raised sustenance, this appalled me beyond all belief.)

I will allow that I do not know how the laws in NV differ from MA. HOWEVER! This strikes me as nothing more than someone with a stick up their @$$ and too much time on their hands harassing people who (and granted, this is solely from their POV) were doing nothing wrong. Even the cops couldn't figure out why they were called, and the health official who called them was unable to come up with something to cite, after intimidating the farmers into destroying all the food they were set to serve. (They weren't even allowed to feed it to the pigs or even compost it!)

I just ... I don't get how people can think that adults are incapable of providing our own food in a safe manner and making reasonable, informed decisions about what we consume.

Meant to post this last night, but I fell asleep. ^_^

We lock the chickens up every night and let them out every morning. Right now, we're letting them out between when the older boy gets on the bus and the younger one's bus time. Come bus time, we throw corn out front so the kids (and other traffic) can see them.

Well, yesterday, we've got the little red ones and the 5 new girls they've adopted out front. I'm on the porch, helping my younger one fix his coat. Next thing I know, there's something battering at the back of my calf. I look down, and Tic has his feathers all ruffed up and is staring at me like, "You! Female! Get in line!" I raise one eyebrow, hook a toe under his chest, and boot him backwards a few feet. (Gently! At no point did I actually kick him!)

Now Tac decides he's going to get into the act, and the two of them are standing in front of me, neck feathers all flared out, trying to get me to acknowledge "my" place in the flock. Problem is, I'm the Big Momma Hen, and after a few minutes of me walking forward slowly and them giving ground, they decided that ticking off the creature with feet as big as their whole bodies is probably a Very Bad Idea. ^_^

So, it starts. Red went through this with both me & Mom when he was just under a year old. We had to pick him up and carry him around each time before he got the hint. Now he's such a sweet boy. And the black Silkie is behaving now that he's killed Elvis. He still doesn't deserve a name yet, and we're still waiting to see if he's going to start chasing my son again. If he does, he's outta here!

(Oh, and my older son is getting into his "teenager" phase, so the next few years are going to be funfun! XP)

There is white stuff falling from the sky and sticking.  It's not even Halloween yet! Not fair!

Yes, I'm used to this. I've lived here my whole life. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Speaking of Halloween )

I took the older one for X-rays on his finger yesterday morning. 8:40 AM and the doc says we're her 3rd X-ray of the day already. Ummm, yay? Fortunately, it's just a sprain, but that does mean he has to keep it wrapped and splinted for a few days. I swear, it seemed like it took longer to get it through his head that, "No, you can't play sports with it on." "Yes, you have to keep it on." "No, you can't take it off for gym and then put it back on." "Yes, we really mean that!" than anything else. (Except maybe waiting for the radiologist to look at the X-ray.) You would have thought we kicked his puppy in front of him when he finally got it. Yeesh. XP

Older son f*cked up his finger in afterschool sports. Didn't tell me until after dinner.   Now we have an appt. with the doc for tomorrow morning, and I had been planning to go in early tomorrow. :le sigh: (It just looks like a sprain, so not too worried.)

Screw trying to roof corral & build new coop. I shall upgrade the existing one and build a 10' X 10' run attached to it.

Have a ficlet snippet from 'Fruitful'. Still working on nudging this section where I want it to go, but I'm not sure it'll work.

I will end up in hell for this fic, I'm sure. )

Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Funeral of "Gay-Friendly" Jobs | Mother Jones

You know, there's a lot I could say about this (and a lot I started to say and just deleted), but I will just point out that their original tweet about the picket was via iPhone and was followed later by:

"Rebels mad cuz I used iPhone to tell you Steve Jobs is in hell.God created iPhone for that purpose! :)"

Soooo, Apple = God and sent their founder to hell?

(Snipped for slightly salty language and whining.) )

And I desperately want to just crawl under my blankets and watch videos, but there's dinner to be made, chores (inside and out) to be done, and crap to pack up so I have room to get stuff off the floor before the storm this weekend.

~1:55 PM: feel a little woozy, like I haven't eaten in a while (but I just had lunch). Few seconds later, feel it again. 3rd time, I look over at Coworker M. M is hanging onto the table like she feels dizzy. She felt it too. K didn't feel anything, and thought M was going to be sick. Then she thought we both were crazy until other people came over saying they saw the shipping truck shaking, tables moving across the 2nd floor, etc.

Husband says they had to evacuate his building b/c of the over head cranes they use to move the ginormous magnets they build.

Get home to find the kids didn't notice a damned thing.

I literally just watch a funnel cloud form practically in our backyard. As in about 100 feet or so of our Eastern property line. What. The. Hell? This is New England. 1 tornado a year is a rarity! This is like the 4th-5th this summer! What the hell is worng with the weather this year? Are they going to be getting blizzards in Florida this winter?
