Just got our annual escrow statement for the mortgage. It turns out that because the city taxes are going down for the next year, our payment is going down by $100 a month for the next year! Even better, when I first glanced at the stub at the bottom, I though that's how much they were asking us for, to cover the upcoming shortfall. Then I read the statement and realized it was a check!

What a wonderful surprise right before our vacation!

(:waits for something to blow up/fall down/Murphy: XD )

Also, Holy $%^&, 3 posts in 1 day? O_o

When I woke up yesterday morning my hair went to my waist. Then I went to my LYS* for some new laceweight yarn for the Mystery Knit Along, because I didn't like/want to use what I had.

There was a cancer support center moving into the building. Their grand opening was yesterday, which is why I went then. So I could do this:

It's now about 1-2" in the back, going to just above my jawline in the front. :)

I have a better before/after setup, but they're on my grandmother's phone, and I can't lay hands on it yet. XP

Great thing to come home to. :)

I got a package. :D )

Say it with me, boys and girls:

My Kindle cover has pirate skulls on it. ^_^

I needed a cover for my Kindle Fire. The problem was, every one I saw was ugly, expensive, or both. Bleh!

I looked around for DIY covers, but all the hardback ones I found required sacrificing an innocent book in order to use its broken husk as a base. :(

Then I remembered, waaaaay back when I was a little geek (not the big geek I am now), doing a particular project in 4-H. We covered a plain looking photo album with fabric & padding, to make it look pretty. In fact, I think I can still locate it, if it survived the basement.

Anyway! I realized I have cardboard, duct tape, fabric, glue, and the know-how! I don't need no one else's stinkin' plans! :D

So, without further gilding the lily, here's my Pirate Skull Kindle Cover, start to finish:

Image heavy :) )

The outside fabric was left over from making a bandana for my husband, since a) he needed them for work and didn't like any of the ones for sale, and b) he had a hard time finding ones that fit. The inside fabric was left over from a corset-like top I made for myself. (Between the measuring and the sewing, I apparently lost enough weight that it's not snug anymore. :P)

OK, not here, but I gave a dozen eggs to my son's first grade class, 3 weeks ago, and they're hatching! \o/ I'm so glad, because the last time we tried this, in preschool, none of them hatched out. (There had been a power outage one weekend, and the eggs got too chilled. Fortunately, we had accidentally hatched some chicks at home, too, so the kids still got to see fluffballs.)

Anyway! I would have been happy if just 1 or 2 hatched out, since I stressed to the kids that there's no way to know, until 3 weeks are gone, if the eggs have chicks in them. No word yet on how many are hatching.

(And best part is I don't have to find room to squeeze them in the coop when they get bigger. They already have a home! XD)

So! This past Saturday, my husband and I schlepped the kids over to the new anime convention in town. It was their first year, and I really hope they come back. We had a blast! The little guy entered his Starscream costume, after a few touchups from "battle" damage from Halloween. He wasn't quite expecting just how popular he would prove to be, though!

Would have been up sooner, but the photos didn't want to upload. :P )

The whole album.

Other people's BamCon photos on Facebook.

Also, the BamCon & GoPittsfield channels have some great videos of other parts of the convention! <3

Mandalas!

I have successfully created my first "mandala" out of a photo! I has a happy! :D

Many many moons ago, I visited a site called Earth Mandalas and downloaded every mandala there. Unfortunately, while the site is still up, it's not active. I promised myself that Someday I would make my own. Well, I finally did it! I made a mandala out of this pic from the Astronomy Pic of the day, and now I'm hopelessly lost. I can see at least 3 more in that image alone, plus how many years has NASA been posting? ROFL!

Maybe if I make enough, I'll do cards or something. <3

Last minute, I know, but I snagged some awesome lenticular skull/rock'n'roll ones at the grocery store. You know, the little ones you give out in grade school? I like them too much to just shove them in a drawer, so if you want a cheesy little card celebrating one of the most commercial holidays (after Xmas), drop me a line!  XD

(Comments screened, of course.)

WANT!

I followed links from an Instructable about building a penny covered desk, and stumbled across these. Oh gods, so pretty, and I'd collect them all just based on the names! <3 I'd have to swap out the chains for black cord (damned allergies), and maybe convert the earrings to clip-ons, but ... Guh!

(Yes, I like the sparklies, even if I normally can't wear them. XP)

This. <3 Of course, now I really really want to get the Chartres Afghan. Of course, I want everything Wooly Thoughts has produced, so.... But at least the Baltic one is free.

So I found this bag of Toll House mini chocolate chips in the freezer while I was putting away groceries, and it has a cheesecake recipe on the back. I tweeted that it looked really tempting (and it does).

Well, someone *cough* :) has been posting about yummy baking adventures today, and asked for a trade, so here it is, right from the back of the bag: (well, minus the Nestle branding LOL)

Chocolate Chip Cheesecake

Crust
1 1/2 cups crushed chocolate sandwich cookies (in other words, ~15 Oreos)
2 Tbs butter, melted
2 cups (~a 12 oz bag) mini choc chip morsels, divided

Filling
2 pkgs (8 oz ea) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 Tbs vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 Tbs all-purpose flour
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup sour cream

For Crust: Preheat oven to 300* F
Combine cookie crumbs with butter in medium bowl until moistened; press onto bottom of ungreased 9 inch springform pan. Sprinkle with 1 cup morsels.

For Filling: Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs & flour. Gradually beat in evaporated milk & sour cream. Pour over crust. Sprinkle with remaining morsels.

Bake for 25 minutes. Cover loosely with aluminum foil, Bake for additional 30 to 40 minutes or until edge is set but center still moves slightly. Place in refrigerator immediately; refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm. Remove side of springform pan.

Note: Cheesecake may be baked in a 13x9 pan. Prepare as above. Bake in a 300* F preheated oven for 20 minutes. Cover loosely with aluminum foil. Bake for an additional 20-30 minutes.

OK, I'm sure I have forgotten tons of stuff by now.

Socks were stalled by the (temporary) loss of the pattern. XP On the other hand, I have revamped the ones I want to do for my Dad and am much happier with them. Scarves are almost done. ^_^

Little guy got a phone call direct from Santa on Weds, and went nuts the rest of the night. ^_~ Then he got a letter from Santa on Saturday. XD

Cards are in the mail (only 1 mailing day late!), as in the mail truck just left with them. The crafty little thing I wanted to do got set aside by me coming to my senses, so I asked the chickens for ideas instead. I can always tell when I'm coming down with a head cold because suddenly, taking on lots of projects when I have a deadline seems like a Really Good Idea! Why I can't be ambitious when it comes to actually getting real shit done around the house, I'll never know.

I have gotten several cards from my lovely f-list, thank you so much! Ratchet's from [livejournal.com profile] mininise28 has been stolen, and the crane that come in [livejournal.com profile] antepathy's card (my favorite color: glitter!) is now nesting in my scrunchie on the Christmas tree. I still have [livejournal.com profile] dragondancer515's, but that's only because my kids haven't gotten to it yet. Apparently, cards from family are boring, but cards from online people are cool. XD

Kids are getting spoiled more than they deserve, at least based on their last actions. I won't go into what, since there's an off chance  my older one will find this before the craziness (3 families in 1 day!) that is this weekend, but suffice it to say I will have a looooot of leverage over them.

Tree's up!

I think I mentioned earlier (somewhere) that we started a new tree decorating tradition a few years ago. We put up the tree (rescued from the bin @ Mom's work) & the lights, grab a beer or wine, and let the little guy go to town. It all started back when he was really little and we picked up a lot of necklaces from The Big E's Mardi Gras Parade. He literally threw them at the tree that year. My mother and I looked at each other, said, "Works for me!" and put the ornaments away.

Enjoy the show. ^_^

Believe it or not, the lights were on the whole time. The tree kept blinking! LOL )

ETA: Yes, those are my scrunchies in pic #5. Someone @ work asked me that. XD

There were 2 minor bright notes over the weekend, and I figure you all are weird enough to get a kick out of my amusement:

1. I got my 6 year old to help me vacuum the entire living room, including the little throw rugs. First, I gave him an 18 lb bag of baking soda (yes, 18 pounds), and showed him how to scatter it over the rugs. He was ... enthusiastic. ^_^ Then, we played "Red Light / Green Light"with the vacuum and its dirt sensor. It took over an hour, but the whole damn living room is a green light. (Of course, by the end, I think it was pulling up bits of the older-than-me rug, but hey.)

2. Thursday was Cookie Day in the kitchen. Which means doing massive (even for a commercial kitchen) amounts of chocolate chip cookie dough and feeding it through one of these .(Actually, the one we have is really really old that they lucked out to find.) It makes those little slugs of ready-to-cook dough you find at the grocery store. Basically, you feed a bunch of dough into the hopper at the top, and it squeezes the dough down to the trays on the conveyor belt, cutting it off on the wire under the hopper as it goes. And all I could think when they pulled it out was "I want one!" I have no idea where I would put it, but I would be preforming cookie dough left and right with it! LOL

For everything else, there's energon goodies. )

We don't have a video of the final, detailed, transformation. He wanted to get out and get candy ASAP, and had to pee when we got back. So, hopefully in the next week or so.

But! I have pics of him and his brother. Older kid wanted to be Darth Maul this year. (Why this year, I don't know.) His was so much easier: Black pants, black shirt, a modified Snuggie to cover the lack of horns, and some face paint. He already had the dual saber from the 6 Flags trip.

The pumpkin really makes the shot. )

Anyone know how I can rotate the video? )

Darth Derp )

Here's the entire album, if you're curious. ^_^

Hai, guyz!

Guess what landed in my living room?

Insert photo shoot )

So. He's happy, but it needs a bit of tweaking. And the other half of the velcro attached to the protoform sweat suit. Yellow duct tape to finish the nose cone, and (obviously) the wings. Just because of the time involved, he won't be transforming at every house, but he can do it, and he's thrilled. He's going to be playing with this until it falls apart.

Also: I have a spider that makes me squeal instead of shriek now! <3

Heard a fuss in the coop while helping older son get ready for bus. Run out expecting trouble (Hubby just told me his coworker lost the hen and chicks I sold him to weasels. They ripped the bottom of the coop door off. T^T).

Two adult chickens spontaneously appeared in the coop overnight. O_o

This must be investigated.

Edit: After letting everyone else out (and leaving the new ones in), it looks like 3-4 5 new birds!
